We won't beat around the bush here. This coffee is exceptional! An SL-28, a variety renowned for its vibrant and complex flavors, is usually associated with East Africa. It’s a washed-process coffee that tastes like a symphony of butterscotch, lime sherbet, and cacao dancing on your palate. It’s so incredible that we seriously considered keeping it all to ourselves. But, alas, we were reminded we do run a business so we have sell some of it. So please, buy this coffee! :)

You are probably thinking this is a single origin from Colombia or Kenya, and we made a mistake on the website. Sure, we do make typos, but not this time! This brilliant coffee is all Brazil! Who saw that coming? We did, obviously, but it’s all thanks to Luiz Paulo Dias Pereira Filho and his pioneering work at Fazenda Santuário Sul in Carmo de Minas. Since 2015, Luiz Paulo has been on a mission to redefine Brazilian coffee. His farm is a living experiment with over 30 exotic coffee varieties, including SL-28, Sudan Rume, Yirgacheffe, Laurina, and Geisha.

Our bond with Carmo Coffee is personal. They’re our largest trading partner, with 90% of our Brazilian coffee coming from their farms. Our founder Taylor spent a week with the Carmo Coffee team and found not just partners but a second family. The warmth, hospitality, and sheer passion for coffee she experienced were unforgettable. She also loved the food…more on that in a blog post someday…!

Here’s the kicker: Even today, even in these incredible coffees out there, the specialty coffee industry often overlooks Brazilian coffee as just a blender, not a single origin. Well, we proudly say, WRONG! Santuário Sul is a prime example of how Brazil and its producers are redefining what Brazilian coffee can be. This coffee is proof that Brazilian coffee can be extraordinary, and we’re honored to bring it to San Diego.

Luiz Paulo’s dedication to quality and innovation has made Fazenda Santuário Sul a perennial finalist in the Brazilian Cup of Excellence competition, even securing a 4th place in 2019. His commitment to pushing the boundaries of Brazilian coffee is truly inspiring. And it’s not just the coffee that’s award-winning. Carmo Coffee’s main warehouse design won a prestigious IF Design Award, and we’ve incorporated this brilliant design into our Santuário Sul coffee bag label as a tribute to their innovation and creativity.

We’re beyond excited to share Santuário Sul with you. It’s not just a testament to the exceptional quality of Brazilian coffee, but also a tribute to the incredible people behind it. So, please, grab a bag of this coffee, brew it, drink it alone, brew it agin, drink it with friends, share it as much as you can, and raise a mug of this delicious brew with those around - "Saúde!”

Fun Fact: The majority of the coffee we roast comes from another Carmo farm and family members of Luiz Paolo, Maria Valéria and Maria Rogéria (the Pereira sisters)! Incredible women who own a farm to that we owe many thanks. Their parents, Antônio Andrade Pereira Filho and Maria da Conceição Costa Pereira, started their coffee-growing journey in the early 70s. Irmãs Pereira (Pereira Sisters) and Luiz have gone on to build Carmo, create jobs, a community and pioneer specialty coffee in Brazil! We are so proud to call these amazing humans our friends and our partners! Maria Rogéria sums it up best: “Our greatest pride is our union as sisters and our main challenge is to keep our pioneering spirit up to date. This is what makes our coffee stand out in the market.”
