¡Bienvenidos a Chiapas! We are stoked to showcase this summer-y, natural process coffee from the Mexico Muxbal Estate in Union Juarez, Chiapas!
The Muxbal Estate sits on the tip-top of a mountain right on the border of Guatemala and Mexico, and is so named after the Mayan phrase “place surrounded by clouds”. Owned by Maeggi Rodriguez and operated by her sons Jorge and Juan Pablo, this estate is partially a coffee farm complete with housing, and a school for the harvest workers’ children, and partially an ecological reserve certified by the Rainforest Alliance.
When Maeggi’s father, Don Enrique, purchased the Muxbal estate, he arrived at a quaint coffee plantation in dire need of renovation. He took drastic measures to construct a road up the mountain, including a dynamite-blasting tool, to create a narrow and winding road rivaling San Francisco’s Lombard Street. Since the completion of the road, the Muxbal Estate now spans across 236 hectares, where Jorge and Juan Pablo are entering into the exploration of natural and honey-processing their harvest.
